17 European countries seeing gonorrhea resistance increase

Decreased susceptibility to the currently recommended treatment for N. gonorrhoeae was reported in an increased number of European countries in 2010, according to the latest ECDC gonococcal antimicrobial susceptibility report [1,2], creating a public health challenge that warrants the international coordination of antimicrobial stewardship programmes. Seventeen countries reported detections of decreased susceptibility to the recommended treatment cefixime in 2010, compared with 10 in the previous year.
